How do I choose the best maintenance cloth?

Not every cloth is suitable for every material. For knives and multi-tools, for example, Ballistol maintenance cloths are ideal because they are very versatile and can be used on almost all surfaces. The cloths are saturated with maintenance oil and effectively clean and protect metal surfaces. Please note: avoid use on knives with copper parts, such as some models of Fällkniven, due to possible discolouration.

For wooden handles or leather covers, there are other cloths or maintenance products that nourish the material and protect it from drying out or cracking. For wood or leather, for example, choose a cloth that has been specifically designed for that purpose. Consider the Robert Herder maintenance cloth, cotton or the Knivesandtools Polishing Cloth. This cloth is made from high-tech suede microfibre and provides thorough cleaning without aggressive agents.

Maintenance cloths for on the go and at home

Whether you're out and about or maintaining your gear at home, there are wipes for every situation. Compact individually wrapped cloths, such as the Ballistol variant, take up hardly any space and fit easily into your backpack or pocket, perfect for outdoor use. At home, you may prefer larger sizes or sets (such as multiple microfibre cloths) so that you can perform regular maintenance without having to reorder every time.

A cloth for home use can also be a bit more comfortable, such as a larger size (like 40x40 cm) or thicker fibres that absorb extra dirt, like the Flitz microfibre cloths. Choose cloths that suit your needs: do you use gear frequently? Then choose a solid cloth that can withstand repeated cleaning. Do you only clean your gear occasionally after a barbecue or outdoor trip? Then a compact maintenance cloth will suffice.
