By finishing your knife on the Belgian stone, you can polish the edge to be a sharp as a razor. This natural stone with a really fine polishing grit has to be used with water.

The **Ardennes Coticule Selected sharpening stone** is comprised of a top layer of Coticule and a bottom layer of unusable black slate. The Coticule stone has a grit between 6000 and 8000 and contains 30 to 42% garnets. This makes the stone very hard. As such your knives will be razor-sharp again in no time. Because of the fine structure of the stone the fold of the sharpened knife will be smooth leaving you with razor-sharp results. Many people use the Coticule stones to sharpen their classic straight razor.


The Coticule has a yellow-white colour with sometimes a red and green glow. 'Selected' offers a homogeneous stone while the 'Standard' comes with some visible beauty flaws or natural discolourations. This, however, won't affect the qualities of the stone. However, because of the delicate edge we recommend using a Coticule Selected Stone when sharpening a straight razor.


 Coticule sharpening stones are natural products. They are modified by hand. As such small differences in shape and size cannot be ruled out.

Naast het werken me diverse slijpsystemen blijft het handwerk met slijpstenen boeien. Een paar jaar terug zou ik er niet over gedacht hebben zoveel geld voor een natuursteen  uit te geven. Het slijpen van een open scheermes heeft dat veranderd.

Op zoek naar de beste slijpmethode voor scheermessen las ik veel over de coticule en werd benieuwd naar de variabele grid van 1000 tot 8000 met 1 steen.

Ik heb voor de selected gekozen, omdat ik zeker wilde zijn dat hij geschikt is voor het slijpen van een scheermes. Daar gebruik ik hem nu vooral voor en dat werkt heel goed. Het geleidelijk verdunnen van de slurry werkt best eenvoudig en ik kan scheren met het mes, dus het moet scherp genoeg worden.

De steen is mooi egaal van kleur en goed afgewerkt en wordt netjes geleverd in een houten kistje en met een slurry steentje. Ik ben er heel tevreden mee, maar hoop vanwege de prijs wel dat ie heel lang meegaat.
