## Zero Tolerance: heavy-duty and American 

Zero Tolerance knives are designed by Ken Onion, among others, in collaboration with Strider Knives. They are manufactured entirely in the United States. Some of Zero Tolerance's most popular knives are the 0550 and 0560 knife, developed with Rick Hinderer. The materials that are used are very robust and the blades are 'built like a tank'. A number of knives, including the 0350, feature the SpeedSafe® assisted opening system. This opening system ensures that the knives are very easy to open with one hand.

## Soft and Hard Arkansas sharpening stones.


Characterizing for these stones is the high grain density. As a result the Arkansas sharpening stones are very hard and waterproof. They are available in grain sizes ranging from approximately 400 to 10.000. Based on these grain sizes the stones are characterized as Soft Arkansas, Hard Arkansas, Hard Black Arkansas, Surgical Black Arkansas and Translucent Arkansas. With the exception of the Translucent Arkansas stones, which have a light colour and are 'translucent', the stones are darker as they become harder. The Surgical Black Arkansas stone is thus the darkest stone available.


## Oil stones: for years of sharpening pleasure

## How do I choose the best power bank? 

Consider which devices you want to charge and how often. For a smartphone, a 10,000mAh power bank will suffice. If you want to charge multiple devices or more energy-intense gadgets, consider a more powerful model. These are often a lot heavier than one with less mAh though, so also think about whether you will carry the power bank with you on a daily basis.

Power banks can be bought on every street corner these days, so to speak. But not all power banks are created equal. Inferior quality is common, unfortunately. . ### Made for modern supersteels 

The HR in Shapton Glass Stone HR stands for High Rockwell. These stones are harder and therefore sharpen faster and more efficiently on high-hardness steels. When choosing a torch, the number of lumens is an important factor, as it determines how strong the light is. For simple chores in and around the house, torches up to 500 lumens are often sufficient. For activities such as camping or hiking, models up to 1000 lumens offer a good balance between brightness and range. For professional applications or situations where maximum illumination is needed, torches with more than 5,000 or even 10,000 lumen are ideal. The right number of lumens depends on your usage situation, and with the right choice, you can work efficiently and comfortably in any environment.

Flashlights by lumens

Although stones are mined in many places all around the world to be used as sharpening stones, there are great differences in the way they work. Each type of stone has a different composition. Even amongst sharpening stones from the same mountains you can often find clear contrasts. Factors that play an important role in the proper functioning of a natural sharpening stone are the grain size, the shape of the grains and the way they are bound together.


## Where are natural stones mined?


There are a couple of mountains known for the mining of natural stones (which, of course, still need to be cut to size and flattened). Two important natural stone sources are the Belgian Ardennes and the American Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas. In addition, in the French-Spanish Pyrenees and the Dolomites (Italy) you can find usable natural stones.


The Arkansas stones are comprised of novaculite, a material which can only be found in these mountains. The grain density which leads to a very hard, waterproof stone is of great importance here. Depending on the part of the mountain range where they are mined, Arkansas stones are available with a relatively low grain size (approximately 400 to 600), but also with a very high grain size (approximately grain 10,000).


## Arkansas stones are oil stones


The sharpening stones from the Ouachita Mountains are best used in combination with oil. It is because of the extreme grain density. The oil removes the sharpening residue more easily and leaves you with less resistance while sharpening. The main advantage of oil stones, compared to water stones, is that they don't wear out as fast. They often last for years. The disadvantage is the hardness which ensures that sharpening takes a relatively long time because the stones remove little material.


## Belgian chunks from the Ardennes


Coticule whetstones, formerly known as Belgian Chunks come from the Ardennes. The grain size of these sharpening stones is difficult to determine. The remarkable thing here is that you can determine the coarseness of the stone yourself. The thicker the slurry you create, the lower the grain size (which varies between 1000 and 16,000). Adding a lot of water naturally leads to a thinner slurry and therefore a more polishing effect.


Another tip to get a finer 'grain' is to use talcum powder instead of water. The smoothness of the edge is also largely determined by the amount of pressure applied when sharpening. The less pressure, the flatter and therefore sharper the edge.

Natural sharpening stones

## Prototyping and milling bits


Were you able to produce a working fixture? If so it is time to start producing and testing prototypes with different tools. Used a milling bit too long? You will see it when you look at the finish of the tool. A part of the finish is therefore determined by how often the bits are replaced. A bit can be cheap, but also pretty expensive. Usually a bit is used for milling away material and another for the finish. Often another very fine bit carefully moves over the surface for that nice finish. Might take a lot of time, but it is definitely worth it.


## Finish after milling


In the end you are left with all the parts that were cut out with a CNC-machine. Done? No. They now namely have a surface finish directly from the milling machine. As such you cannot avoid the fact that every part needs to be finished by hand. Sanding, sandblasting, satinizing: whatever the knife needs.


## Cost of a CNC-machine


The CNC-machine itself also doesn't come for free. Modern CNC-machines that are used today can easily take you back 100.000 euros. Sometimes even more, depending on what the machine can do. That amount will be the basis. This does not include the additional costs of the accessories and spare parts. Cost of items such as cutters and coolant. Maintenance. Costs of a CNC-operator that will control the machine, and its (additional) training.


## Conclusion


So is it really that terrible working with a CNC-machine? Absolutely not. It is the only consistent way of shaping so many parts in 3D. And compared to cutting it out by hand with a saw, sharpening and milling parts it is, in most cases, even cheaper.


You do, however, need to know that it is definitely not cheap. And that it does require a great deal of craftsmanship. From drawing to fixture design and from prototyping to the actual production. It is not that simple.

We are talking about thousands of hours spend on one fixed knife with a sheath. In this video he clearly explains how CNC-milling works for him and you can see his machine in action.

We do have to say that he uses a relatively old model from the mid-nineties. Today CNC-machines are little more advanced, faster, and can handle a lot more. The basic principles, however, remain the same and you still need to know what you are doing.

An important characteristic of binoculars is the field of view. The field of view determines the size of the image you see. For instance, at a distance of 1,000 metres, ask yourself whether you see 2 poles standing 100 metres apart or whether you see them closer to each other or in fact further apart? The field of view is obviously greatly influenced by the magnification factor. The stronger the magnification, the smaller the field of view.

However, there are also variations among binoculars with the same magnification factor. These variations are caused by the ocular lens used, among other things. Binoculars with a larger field of view often make concessions to the eye relief. This is again something to take into account if you wear glasses. However, a large field of view is certainly very comfortable for viewing birds in motion, for instance. You are not likely to lose sight of them so quickly if your binoculars have a wide field of view.

Böhler M390 is one of the most popular types of steel at the moment. It is praised for its excellent sharpness retention. But where did this superstar in the knife world come from? And why is M390 so popular? Knivesandtools explains!


## Where does Böhler M390 come from?


Böhler M390 comes from the Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG factory in Kapfenberg, Austria. This manufacturer produces types of steel that are incredibly wear and tear resistant. The so-called 'specialty steels'. It might come as quite the surprise, but almost all types of steel as we know them today were not developed as knife steel. Many types of steel were developed for ball bearings or parts in jet engines. The same applies to Böhler M390.


Even though Böhler M390 is one of the most popular and best performing types of steel on the market, Böhler developed it to be used in moulds for the injection moulding industry. When you look at the Böhler datasheet you can still see that it is listed as the primary purpose. The fact that it is also great for use in knives is considered to be an alternative purpose.


For these moulds the steel also needs to be extremely wear and tear resistant. If you want to be able to take the same shape from one mould approx. 10.000 times, it shouldn't wear out between casting it the first or the 10.000th time. That is why these moulds are made from top-quality types of steel.


It is therefore not that surprising that M390 is used as steel for moulds. The industrial market is, after all, much bigger. Böhler can sell a lot more kilos of steel to this industry than the knife industry where you are talking about relatively small and light-weight sheets of steel.


## Why is Böhler M390 so popular?


This question comes with a short answer: sharpness retention. M390 is so wear and tear resistant it also properly maintains the shape of the edge. As such a knife made from M390 steel will retain its sharpness for a very long time. This means you don't have to sharpen your knife as often. Not only great because sharpening your knife takes time, but also because it means your knife will last longer. After all, the more often you sharpen your knife, the faster it will wear out. It is not possible to sharpen a blade over its full height: the blade will become too thick behind the edge. This means it won't be as easy to use.
