Spyderco Reveal 22: thirteen new Spyderco knives
With Spyderco Reveal 22, Spyderco presents another range of new knives, and we've added thirteen of them to our collection. There are new versions of familiar models such as the Para Military 2 and the Shaman, alongside new models such as the Thyn, the Byrd Magpie and the Pathway Lightweight. Here's what's new and which knife might suit you best.
Spyderco Reveal 22: two new Salt knives
The Salt series is Spyderco's answer to moisture and salt water: the blade, handle and hardware are made from materials with excellent corrosion resistance. In Reveal 22, two popular models get Salt versions with CPM MagnaCut, a powder steel that combines edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance remarkably well.
The Para Military 2 Lightweight Salt has a bright yellow FRN handle, making it easy to find on a boat or by the water. At 78 grams, it's more than a quarter lighter than the version with a G10 handle. Its satin-finished 8.8 cm blade is secured by a Compression Lock. Choose a smooth-edged blade or the fully serrated SpyderEdge version, which cuts easily through rope and netting.
The Shaman Salt is more robust: a 9.1 cm blade and a yellow-and-black G10 handle, weighing 147 grams together. It also uses a Compression Lock, and you can mount the clip in four positions.
Familiar models in CPM Cru-Wear and CPM REX 121
Is edge retention your top priority? Take a look at these three versions from Spyderco Reveal 22: familiar models, now in a steel type that stays sharp longer. The Bodacious now comes with CPM Cru-Wear, a tough tool steel, and a brown canvas Micarta handle. That puts it alongside other Spyderco knives with this combination, such as the Para Military 2 and the Military 2.
The Caribbean with its leaf-shaped blade and the Kapara both get CPM REX 121 and a Burnt Orange G10 handle. REX 121 is a high-speed steel with exceptional edge retention, but it isn't stainless. Dry the blade after use and apply a thin coat of oil from time to time. The Kapara was designed by Australian knife maker Alistair Phillips and appears as a limited-edition Sprint Run.
Titanium and M390 from Italy
Three knives from Spyderco Reveal 22 come from Italy. The Thyn is a new model with a titanium handle, a carbon fibre inlay and a 7.5 cm Böhler M390 blade. Open it using Spyderco's trademark round hole or the flipper; a frame lock (the Reeve Integral Lock) holds the blade in place. At 66 grams, it's a compact knife for your pocket. The Slym, designed by Michele Pensato, now comes in an all-black version: a black PVD-coated M390 blade and a black titanium handle with carbon fibre. LionSteel makes both knives for Spyderco in Maniago.
The Navigator 3 is smaller and simpler. It's a SlipIt: a pocket knife without a lock, whose spring holds the blade open or closed. Its 5.9 cm blade is made from Böhler M390, and the knife weighs 48 grams with its light-grey G10 handle. A good choice if you're after a small, lightweight knife that doesn't draw attention.
Byrd Magpie and Pathway Lightweight
Spyderco Reveal 22 has news at the affordable end of the range, too. The Byrd Magpie is a new pocket knife from Spyderco's budget-friendly Byrd line, with a back lock, an 8.3 cm black 9Cr18MoV blade and a black-and-white G10 handle. There's also a version with a partially serrated blade.
Looking for a fixed blade? The Pathway Lightweight has an 11.2 cm 9Cr18MoV blade and a black FRN handle, and weighs less than 110 grams. It comes with a plastic sheath and is available with a satin-finished or black blade.
