For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

Spyderco is one of the largest and most famous knife brands in the world. Models like the Spyderco Paramilitary 2, Delica 4 and Tenacious are true classics. Spyderco offers a wide range of functional EDC knives, knives for first responders and premium gentleman's knives. What do these knives all have in common? The signature hole in the blade, an innovation introduced by Sal Glesser in 1981. Today, Spyderco continues to pioneer and is an indispensable brand in the knife world.

The gear keeper is also equipped with a patented flushing system which removes sand, salt water, and debris during normal use. After using the retractor you can also clean it yourself in order to extend the life span of the device.


## Gear Keeper: mounting methods


Gear Keeper uses two so-called Quick Connect systems, attached to the base of the retractor. The difference between these two system is its width: Quick Connect I (Q/C-1) is 1,5 cm wide, Quick Connect II (Q/C-2) is 2,5 cm wide. You need to pay close attention to this detail when purchasing accessories. In addition, there are a number of different methods for attaching a retractor to your clothes, bag, or wrist: a lanyard, snap clip, threaded stud, Velcro strap, Molle mount, or a clip to attach it to your belt.


## Using a gear retractor


You attach the gear retractor to your clothes, bag, or vest using a mounting system. At the base of the tool you will find a mounting system which you can use to attach the retractor to your gear. Think of a flashlight, keys, a camera, GPS units, or any other electronic device. In order to use the concerning device you simply pull it from the retractor. The cord attached to your gear automatically follows. Your gear will always be attached to the retractor. As such you will never be able to drop or lose it ever again. As soon as you are finished you carefully let go of your device and the automatic retracting system will smoothly pull your gear back to the retractor. In short: *grab*, *use*, *let* *go*, and *you are done*. You will no longer have to store any of your devices.

## Features of a Deba knife

Deba knives are characterized by their broad and thick blades, that are sharpened on one side. As a result, these knives are great when cutting and preparing whole fish. Their robust construction makes them perfect for chopping off fish heads and cutting through small bones. The extreme sharpness of a Deba ensures that it is perfect when filleting and skinning fish. Because of this specific design, these knives are less suitable for cutting meat or vegetables, for example.

## How do you choose a good Deba knife?

When looking for a Deba knife there are some factors you need to take into account.

### Blade length and weight

Debas come in many shapes and sizes. The smallest blade length starts at 10 cm, while the largest Debas have a blade length of up to 24 cm. If you only work with very small fish, 10 cm will often be enough. However, if you sometimes also prepare a complete salmon, a 24 cm blade will be better. The bigger the blade, the heavier the knife will become, making it less easy to use for small to medium-sized fish.

### Steel types used for a Deba

Another thing to keep in mind is the type of steel used. Carbon steel is traditionally Japanese and looks amazing. It is easy to sharpen to razor-sharpness. It does require a lot more maintenance because carbon steel is not stainless. It will easily discolour and is even prone to rust. You will mostly notice this for salt water fish. That is why it is great that there are also Japanese Debas that are made from stainless steel. Perhaps a little less traditional, but not any less great.

### Left-handed and right-handed Deba knives

It is key to purchase a left-handed Deba if you are left-handed, and a right-handed Deba if you are right-handed. This really makes a difference during use because the knife is enhanced with a one-sided grind. Are you right-handed? If you are, the grind was added to the right side of the blade. And vice versa for left-handed users, of course.

For example, will you make a lot of stew to go with the bread you already baked in your Dutch Oven? You'll be able to feed a lot of people with a relatively small Dutch Oven. Planning to use the Dutch Oven primarily for soup or other dishes? Then you'll need a big Dutch Oven. A general rule of thumb is to calculate at least 1 litre per person. After all, you should also bear in mind that you don't want to fill the pan to the brim. So with 2 people, you'll end up with a Dutch Oven with a capacity of at least 2 litres. These days, Dutch Ovens are all the rage in the barbecue community. You'll find the most delicious and creative dishes. A Dutch Oven without feet is easy to put on the grill, and with some creativity, a Dutch Oven with feet often manages to do the same. But that is definitely not the only way to use a Dutch Oven! Traditionally, you just put it in a smouldering campfire. But did you know that you can also just use a Dutch Oven on your kitchen hob? Dutch Ovens even work on induction hobs, provided the pan in question doesn't have feet. We do recommend carefully checking the underside of the Dutch Oven for unevenness to avoid scratching the glass plate. To be on the safe side, use a flame distributor for induction, or a stainless steel induction adapter. That way, you can be sure your Dutch Oven won't scratch the glass plate. Of course, this also applies to ceramic hobs with a glass top.

### Dutch Oven with or without legs?
You choose a Dutch Oven with feet if you use it exclusively over a campfire or, with some creativity, on your barbecue or gas burner. The advantage of a Dutch Oven without feet is that you can also use it on your cooktop.

## How to clean a Dutch Oven and how to season a Dutch oven
A Dutch Oven is perfect for cooking over a campfire. The cast iron can withstand high temperatures without becoming damaged. Most pans are already seasoned in the factory to prevent corrosion before first use. It's still important to form your own, better layer of seasoning. Before you use the pan for the first time, clean it and apply a coat of oil. It's best to use vegetable oil such as sunflower or peanut oil. Please note: be careful with people with allergies. Slowly heat the pan. The oil will then be absorbed by the pores of the cast-iron pan. This is called seasoning. It forms a protective and corrosion-resistant layer. If you still see some rust forming on your pan, don't panic. You can remove it with a metal brush and then season the pan again. And if you’re wondering how to get burnt food off your Dutch Oven, it’s no hassle at all: let it soak and gently scrub it off. Repeat the seasoning steps several times for the best result. Never let a cast-iron pan cool down too quickly, putting your hot pan directly under a cold tap can damage it. Do not wash the pan in the dishwasher and never store it if it's not completely dry. ### Washing a Dutch Oven with or without soap
Many people still think that you should not use any detergent when cleaning a Dutch Oven. There is some truth to this: using soap can cause the seasoning to wash away a little quicker. That is true. However, it is also true that a clean pan will season better the next time. And if the seasoning is really well-done, you won't just wash it away with a little detergent. 

### What do you use to season your Dutch Oven?
You can use different types of products to season your pan. Both Petromax and Lodge have their own seasoning paste or spray. This ensures compatibility with the seasoning already present in the pan. But there are also other options. In the United States, people like to use Crisco, a type of cooking fat. This is less readily available in Europe. You can also use a vegetable oil like sunflower oil or peanut oil. Although we would note that you need to do this with very thin layers for good results.

## How to cook in a Dutch Oven
There are several ways to use a Dutch Oven. The options depend on which version of Dutch Oven you own. If the pan has little feet, you can place the pan directly in the open fire, preferably on the smouldering coals. Of course, you can also do this with a pan without legs too. However, the pan soon gets too hot and you'll risk burning your food. That's why it's better to use a pan support for a Dutch Oven without legs. Or use tripod system to hang it over the fire. Another way to use these pans is with glowing coals. You place the pan on top of some smouldering coal and place some smouldering coal on top of the lid. This will allow you to use the pan as an oven. The main advantage of this way is that you easily control the temperature with the amount of coals.

We recommend always taking it easy when exposing your Dutch Oven to heat. Cast iron heats up slowly, and retains its heat very long and well. So if you've heated the pan up too much by accident, it'll be difficult to get it back to the desired temperature. The bright side to this is that heating the pan up is actually very easy. ### 18650 batteries

They provide lots of power and are rechargeable, making them an attractive and economical choice for intensive use. They don't leak, and they have a high capacity. But you do have to bear the following in mind: 18650 batteries like to be used regularly. Are you planning to put an 18650 battery away for longer than 4 months? Then you'll have to use it and recharge it in the meantime. They stay at their best when used regularly.

### 21700 batteries

[21700 batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/21700-lithium-ion-batteries-and-chargers.htm) are rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Like other batteries, they are named after their dimensions: 21700 batteries are 21 mm in diameter and 70 mm long. Because they are rechargeable, they're ideal if you use your flashlight regularly. It's good to remember that 21700 batteries can be protected or unprotected. This protection ensures that the battery doesn't get overloaded. Moreover, a protected battery doesn't overheat. So always choose a high quality battery. The biggest difference between 18650 and 21700 batteries is their size. 21700 batteries are slightly bigger than 18650 batteries. Because it is a little bigger, a 21700 battery also has more power and a longer run time.

### CR123A batteries

These are lithium batteries that cannot be recharged. Often, you can replace one 18650 battery with two [CR123A batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/cr123a-batteries.htm). The big advantage of a CR123A battery is that it holds its charge for 9 years without any significant self-discharge. They also perform better in very cold conditions than Li-ion batteries. ### 16340 battery

From a technical point of view, a [16340 battery](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/aa-batteries-penlite.htm?battery-type=16340) is equivalent to an 18650 battery, but in the size of a CR123A battery. For old flashlights that are too narrow for an 18650 battery but can take CR123A batteries, or for lights that normally run on one CR123A battery, 18340 batteries are definitely worth considering. Some flashlights that run on one CR123A battery deliver a higher capacity with a 16340 battery than with a regular CR123A battery. On the other hand, a 16340 battery usually has a relatively low capacity and therefore doesn't last for as long. The advantage they offer is that they're rechargeable. Again, they need to be used and recharged regularly in order to maintain their capacity as well as possible.

## What is the size of a utility knife?

Stainless steel is an alloy of different elements that can make a knife really sharp, but also keep it sharp. These elements ensure that the steel is strong but not completely stainless. The better the knife can retain its sharpness, the more sensitive it will be to rust. This leaves you with something to think about, but one way or the other you need to compromise. Generally speaking stainless types of steel remain stainless with proper maintenance. Sea air, salt water and acids, however, can still throw a spanner in the works. With every type of steel. Regardless of the price of the blade. As such you should always be careful when you are near the ocean or using salt in your kitchen! ## What are lumens in a flashlight?
Light capacity is expressed in lumens. Lumens are the total amount of light emitted from an LED. The more lumens a flashlight has, the more light it emits. The internationally accepted standard for lumens is the ANSI / NEMA FL 1-2009 standard. This standard has been established by well-known American multinationals such as Duracell and Energizer. It describes the measurement procedures for 'directional lighting'. This also includes flashlights. The flashlight industry has also created an additional standard of its own: the ANSI / PLATO FL-1 standard.

## Lumen or ANSI standard?
Almost all modern flashlights come from China. This is true of both good and bad flashlights. However, the manufacturers of quality flashlights use the FL1 lumen standard because they have nothing to hide. Manufacturers who do have something to cover up often only say 'lumens' so that they don't have to follow the ANSI standard measurement procedure. Performance is then often exaggerated. ## Capacity (Watts) and lumens
Variants with a type number ending in the number 2 are the second generation of the specific LED. This table clearly shows that the number of lumens per Watt is increasing. LEDs are becoming more powerful and efficient, and so are LED flashlights. Compared to a light bulb, LED flashlights are already incredibly powerful, and the difference is getting bigger and bigger!

## Battery technology

This battery has high power and a high capacity, so it supplies enough juice for the energy-hungry LEDs.
