This **Hultafors Hult Premium splitting axe** is great when splitting firewood. It's heavy 1.5 kg head will have a devastating effect when it hits the block. Even though a splitting axe doesn't really have to be sharp this axe is razor-sharp. The edge is even polished! Combined with the brute, forged look of the axe head. The name 'Hult' means 'forest' in Old Swedish. With it they refer to the city of Hults Bruk where Hultafors axes are forged. The name comes from the area where the city is located: wooded.

The Hultafors Hult comes with a solid leather sheath that protects the edge.

## Hultafors axe head

The axe head is forged from Swedish axe steel. The edge is hardened to make sure it is strong enough to stay sharp without breaking, but can also be sharpened. Basically everything you like to see in an axe head. The Hultafors axes are reliable and will last a lifetime. That is why Hultafors gives a lifetime warranty on the axe head of all Premium axes.

## Axe handles

Hultafors uses American hickory wood for the handles. This type of wood is exceptional in absorbing blows without breaking. As such it is perfect as a handle for hammers and, of course, axes.

## Characteristics of Hultafors Premium axes

The axe heads used for the Hultafors Premium collection are forged in the same way as the heads used for the Agdor axes. The remarkable aspect of the Premium collection, however, is that they are mostly made by hand. After forging the axes are finished on belt sanders by skilled craftsman. First the geometry of the head is refined. Afterwards the heads are hardened and tempered to 55 HRC. 

After that a Premium axe is sharpened. By hand! Until every edge will shine like a mirror. Finally the head is enhanced with a handle and a premium sheath.

Het is de eerste keer dat ik aan het klieven ben dus mijn techniek is nog niet optimaal, maar de bijl werkt erg goed, ligt goed in de hand en is vlijmscherp, het gewicht is erg prettig te hanteren. En heel mooie bijl ook, je kunt hem in de huiskamer hangen!

Gekocht voor het splijten van hout. 
Uit de doos scherpe bijl en het smeedwerk is goed zichtbaar wat het aantrekkelijk maakt. De steel is netjes afgewerkt en de lederen beschermhoes maakt het af. 

Een paar uur gebruikt voor het splijten van een stapel Douglas blokken (~30cm hoog en 40cm diameter). De bijl heeft een goede swing en je kan veel snelheid maken met de kop wat resulteerd in een goede klap. De kop is niet bijster zwaar wat het slaan en richten minder vermoeiend maakt. Ik ben niet een ervaren hakker maar het hout kreeg ik snel klein. 

Een minpunt is dat de steel net onder de kop niet is beschermd en de kop ook niet heel breed is. Aan het eind van de sessie had ik een kleine overslag midden in het blok, het blok speel niet helemaal en de steel raakte daardoor beschadigd, uiteraard mijn eigen fout. Een stalen beschermring rondom zoals andere merken dat hebben zou hier zeker geholpen hebben en dat scheelt uiteindelijk een duur handvat.
