I bought this QSP because I wanted a nice, completely black knife.
I’m not familiar with a coating on a blade, though. I suppose a coating wears off with use, so why choose black at all? But anyway.
In the photo, you see a very nice black handle, and it looks great.
However, when I received the knife, the handle wasn’t nicely black at all, but a very ugly grey.
I thought I’d been sent the wrong knife, so I emailed them, but that’s just how it is. The handle is made of micarta. These are fibres bonded together, and they can dry out if the knife isn’t used. Then the black handle turns grey.
If you use the knife, the oil from your hands will make the handle black again, but that can take a long time, since of course you don’t hold the knife all day.
If you want to speed that up, you can rub the handle with mineral oil, and it will turn black again more quickly.
If you put the knife away because you’re using another one, the handle can dry out again and you’ll need to oil it once more.
It’s a shame this information wasn’t included with the knife, because I wasn’t familiar with micarta.
If I want to use the knife, I first need to find some oil, because right now the handle is horribly ugly grey, and of course you really don’t want to use it like that.
If this information had been included, I could have ordered the oil straight away.
But honestly, having to use oil to keep the handle looking good is not for me at all. If I’d known that, I would never have bought the knife.
Sadly, I’m not going to use this knife.
If you want to buy this knife too and you don’t mind putting oil on the handle, I’d get mineral oil straight away, because your black QSP might also come out of the box looking very ugly and grey.
Other colours may be less of a problem, but those micarta handles will likely need oil as well.
I also bought the QSP with the green handle. I can see that one is losing colour too, so it has probably dried out a bit and will need oil as well — another disappointment.
The knife itself — I use the green one — is absolutely brilliant. The design couldn’t be better, it fits the hand well, the blade isn’t too long, and the action is excellent, so I’m very happy with it.
I found it difficult, but since the knife works brilliantly for me, I still gave it 5 stars.
